Euroleague 2021/22

The Euroleague 2021/22 season ended up being really exciting. The season, which started with 18 teams, ended with 15 teams after CSKA Moscow, Zenit Sint Petersburg and UNICS Kazan were suspended because of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. All of the matches of these Russian teams were cancelled and points were forfeited, meaning the standings got mixed up quite a bit after that.

At the end of the regular season, FC Barcelona came on top. This was no surprise, as season MVP Nikola Mirotić (with the highest individual player rating) had been leading the team to a total of 21 wins. Surprisingly Barcelona didn’t become the favoured champions, as they were eliminated in the Final Four by their biggest rivals Real Madrid. This was another deception for coach Šarūnas Jasikevičius.

The Final Four was held in Belgrade and turned out to be very good. The Stark Arena, with almost 30.000 seats, was packed with Olympiacos fans. The semi final, unfortunately for the Red and White fans from Piraeus, turned into a loss for them, because of a last second buzzer beater from Anadolu’s Vasilije Micic. Micic, who was also top scoring player during the regular season (18.2 points per game), was later crowned the Euroleague 2022/23 Finals MVP.

The Euroleague Final was played between reigning Euroleague Champions Anadolu Efes from Istanbul and Real Madrid, and turned out to be spectacular until the final minute. During the last seconds at a standing of 57-58 in favour of the Turks, it was a coaching mistake from legendary Real Madrid coach Pablo Laso, handing Efes their second consecutive Euroleague title.
