2017 FIBA EuroBasket Betting Guide

FIBA EuroBasket 2017 LogoThe 40th EuroBasket Championship will take place between the 31st of August and the 17th of September. The EuroBasket 2017 event will take place across four different nations. The previous event was held in 2015 but from this point onwards, the EuroBasket event will be held every four years.

The 2015 EuroBasket event was supposed to be held in Ukraine but due to unrest in the country, the tournament was held in four countries. Ukraine was asked if they would like to host the EuroBasket 2017 event but they declined due to the continuing unrest, which led to FIBA opening applications for the event.

In November of 2015, it was announced that five national federations had applied to be a host for the EuroBasket 2017 event, Finland, Poland, Israel, Romania and Turkey. In December, it was announced that the four host countries for the 2017 EuroBasket event would be:

  • Israel
  • Romania
  • Finland
  • Turkey

Turkey will have the honour of hosting the knockout stage of the tournament with the action taking place at the Sinan Erdem Dome, which is in Istanbul. This was the setting for the 2017 Euroleague Final Four, so this has been a hugely popular year for the venue, and Istanbul is a city that adores basketball, so it is a fitting location to host such a prestigious basketball event.

Futures

While there are many different types of bets for basketball fans to choose from, the Futures bet is a very popular option. This is a bet that is made on an event that is decided in the future. A great example of a Futures bet is placing a bet on which team will win a tournament and the 2017 EuroBasket tournament is an example of a tournament with Future bets on offer.

Closer to the time when rosters are officially announced, there will be a chance to bet on which player will be awarded the MVP for the tournament and which player will score most points but for now, there is a focus on which team will win the 2017 EuroBasket.

The Bet365 Futures market for the 2017 EuroBasket event is up and running and Spain are favourites at odds of 2.75. Serbia are next in line at odds of 5.00 and France can be backed at odds of 6.00. Greece are listed at 6.50 while Lithuania are found at 11.50 and Turkey, who will be the host team for the knockout stage if they get there can be backed at 15.00. This is the same odds for Italy while Croatia are listed next at 23.00. Slovenia can be backed at 26.00, Latvia are listed at 41.00, Russia are 51.00 and Montenegro can be found at 67.00.

From this point, the odds move out with Germany at 81.00, Israel at 101.00, while there is a raft of countries joining Finland at 151.00 including the Czech Republic, Georgia and Poland. At 201.00 you will find Belgium and Ukraine while Great Britain can be backed at 251.00, Iceland are at 301.00 and the two rank outsiders are Hungary and Romania, listed at 501.00.

Bet on the Group Winner

Bet365 also has a Futures market for the group stages, which means you can bet on which team will come top of their group.

Group A is led by France who can be backed at odds of 2.00 to top the group, Group B sees Lithuania as the favourites at odds of 1.85 to top the group, Group C has Serbia as group favourites with odds of 1.50 to come out on top and Spain are favourites for Group D, with odds of 1.25 to top their group.

EuroBasket Totals

Another very popular form of betting for basketball fans is the Totals bet. This style of bet sets a point marker being set up and you place a bet stating that there will be more or fewer points scored than the marker. If you wager more points will be scored and more points are scored, you win your bet. If you wager more points will be scored and fewer points are actually scored, you lose your bet.

These bets will become available closer to the time and will definitely be available in the run-up to the opening games, which take place on the 31st of August 2017. In Group A, one of the opening day games sees France take on Finland. France are Group A favourites while Finland are the host nation in Group A, so hopefully this will be an exciting game.

Will the Game go Over or Under?

In this match, if the points marker is taken as 155.5, you will place a bet on whether more or fewer points than 155.5 will be scored. It doesn’t matter what the final score is or who wins, the only issue that matters is how many points are scored.

If you place an OVER bet on 155.5, you are betting on 156 points or more being scored in the game. The game could finish France 156 – 0 Finland, France 100 – Finland 60 or France 76 – 82 Finland and all of these bets would be won, because they all stated that over 155.5 points would be scored.

If you placed an OVER bet on 155.5 and the game finished France 155 – 0 Finland, France 76 – Finland 75 or even France 70 – 80 Finland, all of these bets lose because the total points scored was under 155.5.

EuroBasket 2017 Point Spreads

You will also find that the Point Spreads market is an important one for basketball fans and like the Totals Bet, the winning or losing of the game isn’t the key factor, it is the margin of the win or loss. In Group C on 31st of August, Spain take on Montenegro. Given that the Spanish are favourites for the tournament, it stands to reason that they will be favourites to beat Montenegro in this game. This means placing a bet on Spain to win the match will not be of great value.

This is why Points Spread betting is interesting because it offers better value. You will find a range of bets on offer and you may find that there are odds of 1.90 on Spain to win the match with a -7.5 handicap. If you place this bet, you need Spain to win by at least 8 points. It doesn’t matter what the score is, as long as Spain win the game by at least 8 points.

Which Sportsbook Offers the Best Odds?

By the same token, you should find a bet of 1.90 for Montenegro with a +7.5 handicap. If Montenegro win the game or lose by no more than 7 points, you win your bet. Spain can still win the game but if they won by 6 points, a bet on Montenegro with a +7.5 handicap would be a winning bet. This is why Points Spread betting is so interesting because it ensures every game has an edge.

Props

With the tournament still being a month away at this point in time, the Props bets are not yet available for the 2017 FIBA EuroBasket tournament. However, these bets will be made available nearer the time and Prop or Prop Bets can be a great way to add excitement to a basketball game or event. There is a range of side bets available such as the score at half-time, the margin of points lead at half-time, which team will score 20 points first, which team will score first, who will score next, which player will score next and many other prop bets.

Another exciting aspect about basketball betting, and an aspect which will come into play in the 2017 FIBA EuroBasket is prop bets. These are the side bets or the extra bets that are found in basketball. You may find bets available on which team will be leading in the first half, which team will score the first point in a particular quarter or which player will score next. There is an abundance of prop bets and with live in-play betting options available for the 2017 FIBA EuroBasket, you will find that there are plenty of props bets available for you.
