The 2016/17 Eurocup campaign will be the 15th season and it will be referred to as the 7 Days Eurocup due to sponsorship reasons. 20 of the teams taking part in the 2016/17 Eurocup earned their place in the tournament through their position in their domestic league while four teams have gained access to the Eurocup in 2016/17 through a wildcard selection.

The four wildcard teams are:

  • MZT Skopje Aerodrom
  • Lietkabilis Panevezys
  • Volgograd
  • Montakit Fuenlabrada

There will be 6 Spanish teams in this season’s Eurocup, 5 from Russia, 3 from Germany, 2 from Lithuania and 1 from Montenegro, Croatia, Serbia, Greece, Israel, Poland, Slovenia and the Republic of Macedonia.

The 2016/17 regular season for the Eurocup begins on 12th October 2016 and runs through to 14th December 2016. There will be 24 teams participating in the tournament and they will be separated into four groups. The groups will be listed Group A, Group B, Group C and Group D with every group having 6 teams.

Each team will play their group rivals twice, ensuring that each team plays 10 games in their group. The top four teams in each group will progress through to the Top 16 stage, which will take place after New Year.

The shrinking of the Euroleague competition from 24 teams to 16 teams means that there will be many teams participating in the Eurocup who have good experience at the top level of European basketball. While some teams may need time to adjust to the tournament, this should provide the scope for competitive games and an exciting series of games.

At the time of creating the contest, these are the 24 teams participating in the 2016/17 Eurocup season can be found in the following groups. This is according to the Eurocup website but with a number of legal matters to be concluded with respect to certain teams and their domestic basketball association, it may be that there are still changes to be made to the Eurocup this season.

The fact that the first games are scheduled for the middle of October ensures that there is plenty of time for changes to be made to the groups and fixtures. The Eurocup 2016/17 Top 16

The 2016/17 Eurocup will take place between 4th January 2017 and 8th February 2017. The 16 teams will be split into four groups, Group E, Group F, Group G and Group H. Each team will play their group opponents twice which means that every team will play six games in their Top 16 group.

The breakdown of participation in the Top 16 is as follows:

Group E

  • 1st from Group A
  • 2nd from Group B
  • 3rd from Group C
  • 4th from Group D

Group F

  • 1st from Group B
  • 2nd from Group C
  • 3rd from Group D
  • 4th from Group A

Group G

  • 1st from Group C
  • 2nd from Group D
  • 3rd from Group A
  • 4th from Group B

Group H

  • 1st from Group D
  • 2nd from Group A
  • 3rd from Group B
  • 4th from Group C

The best two teams in each group will make their way through to the Quarter-Finals of the 2016/17 Eurocup.

Quarter-Finals

The quarter-finals will be played out between 27th of February 2017 and 8th of March 2017. This round will feature teams playing off in a best of three format. The higher ranked team will play at home in the opening game and if required, in the third and final game.

  • Quarter Final A: 1st from Group E vs. 2nd from Group G
  • Quarter Final B: 1st from Group F vs. 2nd from Group H
  • Quarter Final C: 1st from Group G vs. 2nd from Group E
  • Quarter Final D: 1st from Group H vs. 2nd from Group F

The four winning semi-finalists will make their way through the semi-finals.

Semi-finals

The semi-finals in the 2016/17 Eurocup will be played out between 14th of March 2017 and 22nd of March 2017. This round will feature teams playing off in a best of three format. The higher ranked team will play at home in the opening game and if required, in the third and final game.

  • Winner of Quarter Final A vs. Winner of Quarter Final B
  • Winner of Quarter Final C vs. Winner of Quarter Final D

Eurocup Final

The Eurocup Final will take place between 28th March 2017 and 5th April 2017. This round will feature teams playing off in a best of three format.
